電子書籍の新仕様の最終版を発表

統一仕様の登場は出版社による電子版タイトルの供給を促進

メリーランド州ゲイサーズバーグ（ワシントン近郊） − 1999年9月21日 −　電子書籍用の出版物がもっと速く増えて欲しいという期待や、違う出版社からの出版物でも消費者が共通のフォーマットで入手できればという期待が高まる中、Open eBook Authoring Groupは本日、「Open eBook Publication Structure 1.0」の最終版を発表した。「Open eBook Publication Structure 1.0」は印刷物を電子媒体用に変換するときのフォーマットを規定している。

出版社・電子ブックの先駆各社・ソフトウェアベンダー・ハードウェアメーカーなどからなるOpen eBook Authoring Groupは、３ヶ月前に勧告案(draft recommendation)を提示しており、仕様は全Open eBookメンバーによる投票にかけられた。投票の結果、絶対多数で最終仕様が承認された。

Open eBookの仕様はインターネットのWebページで使われている言語であるHTMLとXMLをベースにしており、出版社や著者が単一のフォーマットで著作物を配布する事ができるようになる。この仕様に準拠したものならどんな電子書籍リーダーでもこの共通フォーマットを読めるので、これによって電子出版物の増加が加速されることが期待される。出版社はひとつの出版物をいろいろな電子書籍リーダーごとに個別にフォーマットし直すことなく、多くの読者に提供できるようになる。また、この仕様は既存の電子書籍デバイスがすぐに対応しやすいようにも作られている。

「電子書籍の統一規格はの迅速な採択は出版業界の重大事件だ。」とSimon & Schuster の社長Jack Romanos 氏は言う。「フォーマットが競合する不安定な状況が解消され、すべての出版社が出版業界の電子的な未来に向かって進んでいく速さにいっそうの弾みをつけるだろう。」

「これほど多様な業界からの代表が集まっているのにたった一年で仕様を作成して発表できたというのは驚くべき業績であり、伸びつつある電子書籍産業に大きな影響を与えることは間違いない。」と、米国商務省の技術行政機関であるNISTの技術マネージャーVictor McCrary博士。「Open eBookグループはめざましい進歩を成し遂げただけでなく、この仕様はアクセシビリティと国際化も考慮されているという点でも革新的である。」

「Open eBook グループ参加者たちの熱心な努力と先見の明は、電子書籍の時代を開いたものとして歴史に記録されるだろう。」と言うのは、マイクロソフトの技術担当副社長のDick Brass氏。彼は一年前のNIST主宰の電子書籍コンファレンスでこのような統一仕様を作るというアイデアに強い支持を表明していた。「OEB規格があれば、出版社はコンテンツの電子フォーマット化を一度行うだけで、Open eBook仕様をサポートしたあらゆるデバイスやソフトウェアで使用可能にすることができる。これは出版社や電子書籍の先駆者たちだけでなく、消費者にとっても大きな勝利だ。彼らはこの規格を完成するのに大変な努力をした。業界全体で彼らに感謝すべきだ。」

「NuvoMediaの Rocket eBookはHTMLベースのコンテンツとWebベースの安全な配信システムを使っている。この製品が刺激となって、電子書籍市場が発展し、電子書籍専用のフォーマットが求められるようになったのだ。」と、NuvoMedia の共同設立者にしてCEOの Martin F. Eberhard 氏。「このXMLベースの仕様によって、出版社はより豊富で面白いコンテンツをRocket eBookや他の読書デバイスに提供を可能となる。OEB Authoring Groupの設立メンバーとして、我が社はこれを歓迎する。」

「Open eBook Publication Structure 1.0」はOpen eBook のWebサイト http://www.openebook.org/ で既に入手可能となっていて、いろいろな会社や団体ですぐにでもこの仕様を使い始めることが望まれている。Open eBook Authoring Group は Electronic Book '99 Conference が開催された直後の9月23日に、同じメリーランド州ゲイサーズバーグでOpen eBook Educational Half-Day というイベントを開催する予定。これは興味のある団体すべてに対して開かれた参加費無料のイベントで、最終仕様についてOpen eBook Authoring Groupのメンバーから直接学ぶことのできるチャンスである。仕様自体とその使い方についての詳細な説明が行われる。

Electronic Book '99 Conference は、9月21-22日にNIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology)で開催される今年で2回目の電子書籍カンファレンス。伸びつつある電子書籍産業に関連するソフトウェアベンダー、ハードウェアメーカー、出版社、その他の会社から600名以上の参加が見込まれている。(http://www.itl.nist.gov/div895/ebook99/)
